"What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world."

My brief comment. There are those who might criticize me for putting quotes critical of war amidst photographs showing the toll of war in honor of veterans. But we honor veterans because of what they have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice. If we are not conscious of the awfulness and cost of war, we have little reason to honor those who pay the price. Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Dwight D. Eisenhower - each of these war leaders was clearly aware of the heavy cost of war, and it made them better leaders.
